On the personal front, we find thousands of “voluntourism” organizations springing up around the world (Hint: entrepreneurial opportunity? employment?) to cater to people’s aspirations of adventure travel, service and professional exchange – all on the same ticket. We find companies turning more and more to strategic sabbatical programs, because they’ve discovered that when done right, these initiatives are productivity enhancement tools… employeese return refreshed, wiser – and loyal; companies get to train and evaluate substitutes in the temporarily vacated role… Good business.
All told, the world of “exchange” – as defined by business, marketing, finance, and any discipline affecting commerce – will be decidedly different for graduates in coming years. Furthermore, our very relationship to employment will be radically different, as individuals are offered more opportunities to “Brand You” while exploring how to blend recreational, aesthetic and other personal tangents into their occupational life.
